While attending university, I had the wonderful opportunity to connect with many great mentors who helped guide me throughout my four years on campus. One mentor in particular shared life-changing advice during one of the most challenging periods I faced during my senior year, both personally and academically. At the time, my mentor, Sam, was pursuing his masters degree and knowing this, I asked about his experience in grad school and if he had any advice for a student like me who was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do after college.
Similar to a lot of college students, I had anxiety about my post-grad life, so I sought advice to help me out and give some much-needed perspective.
Thinking back, I don’t think my mentor’s advice resonated with me quite as much as it does today. I just came across this list in my iPhone Notes app and after reading it, I’m so happy I jotted down everything he said from that day we spoke. The advice he gave me that day has helped me navigate through life with a optimistic yet grounded approach.
Here’s a list of 11 valuable pieces of advice my mentor shared with me, written in my own words:
I hope this advice helps you as much as it’s helped me, both during and after college. If you’re still in college and nervous about what the future holds, just remember we’ve all been there. Luckily, there are so many mentors out there who want to help you–most of the time, all you have to do is just reach out and ask.
